VAN HALEN: "Weighing All Options" Following Split With Warner Bros.
February 2, 2002VAN HALEN are "currently weighing all the options and seeing what the future brings, [but] it's still premature to say where the band will go [following their split with longtime label Warner Bros. Records]," the group's attorney, Alan Mintz, told Billboard magazine. According to Mintz, VAN HALEN will "seriously consider" major label offers, but he didn't rule out signing with a large independent. "These are interesting times," he is reported to have said. A couple of different sources confirmed to Billboard that VAN HALEN's contract was not up with the label, but the two parties agreed amicably to part ways. One source apparently told the magazine that VAN HALEN left because Warner Bros. wanted the act to record a new album with former lead singer David Lee Roth (with whom leader Eddie Van Halen had reportedly written three songs in 2000),but that Eddie Van Halen had rejected the idea flat-out. However, another unnamed source reportedly claimed that the decision to split "was not a function of where the band was musically. There were business reasons."
